Residency Overview
This is a one year optometric residency in ocular disease with an emphasis on primary care and glaucoma.
The management of common, and uncommon, ocular pathologies in patients with complex medical histories is highlighted. Residents will gain confidence in advanced ophthalmic procedures, including gonioscopy, peripheral retinal evaluation with fundus contact lens/scleral depression, digital photography, B-scan ultrasonography, and optical coherence tomography. They will order appropriate lab work, imaging studies, and other procedures when indicated, and they will be able to follow their own patients. They will primarily perform direct care examinations, although there are opportunities for precepting fourth-year externs as the residency progresses. Residents will be expected to prepare lectures during joint Perry Point-Baltimore VA virtual conferences on Friday afternoons, and they will moderate periodic journal clubs with externs. Successful completion of the program will also include preparing a manuscript of publishable quality and giving a final clinical case presentation at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University.
